A Gamer's Cheat Codes Wiki

Sonic & Knuckles is a 1994 platform game developed and published by Sega, released on October 18, 1994. It is part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. You have the option of playing as either Sonic the Hedgehog or, for the first time in the series, Knuckles the Echidna in their quests to save Angel Island.

Sega Technical Institute developed Sonic & Knuckles simultaneously alongside Sonic 3. Plans to release the two games as one fell through due to time constraints and development costs. It worked out however, as Sonic & Knuckles was the first (and only) SEGA cartridge to feature an adapter that allowed players to connect other Genesis/Mega Drive games to it; Sonic the Hedgehog 3's cartridge could connect, creating the almost-original experience, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could also be attached, allowing players to use Knuckles, and his gliding ability in Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Cheat Codes[]

All of the codes provided relate to the original Mega Drive and Genesis releases of Sonic. Later re-releases or remakes may not have these cheat codes, or the codes may have changed.

Level Select In Mushroom Hill Zone, while hanging off one of the pulling machines, press Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, Up. You should hear a ring chime. Pause and press A to be taken back to the title screen. Highlight either Sonic or Knuckles as your character. Press Start while holding A. The menu shows all the levels in both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, but you can only play stages that match a certain character. If you want to leave a level, just pause and press A again to go back to the title screen.

Trivia[]

  • This is technically the only main Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic title to not feature a Debug Mode through normal means. There are exploits that you can do to activate it, however some can cause your game, console, or both to become damaged.
    • It's also technically a leftover from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, so it's a virtually unnecessary action to take other than the novelty of it.
