Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the games you can play by locking Sonic the Hedgehog 2 onto Sonic & Knuckles via Lock-On Technology. Knuckles "breaks barriers" by replacing Sonic and Tails as a playable character, including all of his abilities from Sonic & Knuckles. This game is mostly the same as the normal Sonic 2, but it has a few changes made to accommodate color changes relating to sprites, altering the title screen, and removing both the 2-Player Mode and Options menu.
The game has been re-released through multiple compilations as its own game, including Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Classic Collection, and brought to mobile, as Knuckles was implemented into the Taxman and Stealth remake of Sonic 2.
A version of Sonic 1 locked onto Sonic & Knuckles is rumored to have been originally planned as a 'Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog' Lock-On title, but was cancelled in favor of a full version of Blue Sphere. Simon "Stealth" Thomley would make a ROM hack of this concept in 2005, and would eventually become an official reality in the Taxman and Stealth remake of Sonic 1.
It can be unlocked by playing 20 times of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Spinball in Sonic Mega Collection.

All of the codes provided relate to the original Mega Drive and Genesis releases of Knuckles in Sonic 2. Later re-releases or remakes may not have these cheat codes, or the codes may have changed.
